Come as strangers, and leave as friends. That is the hope of Fallasburg Historical Society (FHS) President, Bruce Doll, about this year’s Feast & Fire.

Sporting a brand new name and March date, close to St. Patrick’s day, the event is poised to attract a lot of people to the beautiful historical setting of the village and the one-room schoolhouse, located six miles north of Lowell.

“We’ve made a few changes to the event, but the bonfire has been here for a long time,” Doll said. Among the changes is the timing of the bonfire, which used to take place after the annual Christmas party at the one-room schoolhouse. “People are excited about it,” Doll said. “It’s a slower time of the year. We want to get people together and have a good time. We’ll have great music by Hawks and Owls; you will get to meet a lot of people from this area and beyond. If it works out well, we will stick with the March date for the event.”

Often people, who lived in the village, come back to see it, and people who like history, according to Doll.

Last year, approximately 75 to 80 people showed up. Parking will be in the field across from the schoolhouse.

A potluck meal will be served; everything ranging from lasagna, meatballs to burritos and more, plus beverages. “You can bring anything,” Doll said. “You meet people that you don’t know and then you’re friends.”

It will be lighter in the schoolhouse as new antique lighting has been installed, as well as small cocktail tables. Also new this year is the fire dancer, Corinn Wojciechowski, of Ionia. She takes batons, lights them and eats the fire. Of course, she has a fire extinguisher. “We wanted to do something different,” Doll said.

If you plan on bringing food, come a little earlier, around 5:30 p.m.; the potluck starts at 6 p.m., along with the music that lasts until 8 p.m. The bonfire starts at 7 p.m. and burns through 9 p.m. “It’s quite a photographic opportunity,” Doll said. “I hope everyone has a good time. I like it because it brings people together.”

The Fallasburg Historical Society exists to preserve and promote the unique history of Fallasburg Village, by bringing it's past to life for present and future generations.

The location is 13944 Covered Bridge Rd, Lowell.
