Fast Start Pushes Lowell Past Eagles

With leading face-off player JD Huyser not on face-offs temporarily due to a finger injury, Lowell Boys Lacrosse turned to two players who weren’t part of the starting rotation last year.
Christopher Rogers and Carter Cichocki filled in admirably, Rogers going 4 for 8, Cichocki going 5 for 11, and JD Bacon adding a face-off win as Lowell used a near perfect first quarter to cruise past Grand Rapids Christian, winning 14-3 over the Eagles.
It was a quick start that made things easier for the host Red Arrows. Weston Godbold got the ball to Caden Cone for the Red Arrows first goal of many in the first quarter. A Cichocki face-off win led to an unassisted goal by Teige Bredin who cut across goal for a 2-0 lead. Lowell jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and were amped up after the solid start.
It wasn’t just Lowell’s home opener, but their season opener. The Holt Rams canceled the varsity match with the Red Arrows on March 20th due to cold weather.
Grand Rapids Christian was able to finally get on the board late in the second quarter, making it 9-1, which Lowell took into halftime. Lowell kept the momentum going on a Huyser assist to Rogers. GRC got one back before Godbold and Rogers scored goals of their own to make it 12-2 and make the game effectively out of reach.
Last year, Lowell beat Grand Rapids Christian 12-7, and while the Red Arrows lost plenty of talent from last year’s team, there’s a solid core of returning starters including six Red Arrows committed to play lacrosse at the next level. Offensively, Lowell will be led by senior and Northwood commit Andrew Rogers. Rogers is likely to break plenty of boys lacrosse career offensive statistical records. He’ll be helped up front by Kalamazoo College commit Teige Bredin and Hope commit Weston Godbold. At the back Lowell will be led by Concordia Ann Arbor commit Kailen Stokely, Albion commit JD Bacon, and GVSU commit Graham Boonstra.
It’s a huge signing class for Lowell Lacrosse, who will be hoping to repeat last year’s playoff run where they reached the state semifinals.
To cap the game, Braddock King found Cichocki, two wrestling state placers, and Cichocki let one fly from a long distance which took a deflection and went in, finishing off a 14-3 win.
Tevin Vanderboon had 11 saves in goal.
Assists were made by Christopher Rogers (1), Weston Godbold (1), JD Huyser (2), and Andrew Rogers (1). Goals came from Weston Godbold (4), Andrew Rogers (4), Jackson Roudabush (1), Carter Cichocki (1), Teige Bredin (3), and Caden Cone (1).
Lowell is at Caledonia and at Zeeland coming out of spring break.
