A slow start batting didn’t faze Lowell Softball as they scored in their last three innings to beat Cedar Springs to open the season. A full game seven inning outing by ace Megan Lillie helped keep the Red Hawk bats quiet in the 6-2 victory. She went the distance allowing seven hits, two runs, one walk, and had nine strikeouts.
Cedar Springs opened the scoring with a two-run third inning and led 2-0 after three innings. Lowell was being no-hit through three but that would quickly change.
The Red Arrow scoring started with one out in the fourth inning as Amaya Jackson tripled out to right field. The very next pitch Jordyn McClymont hit a ground ball into the gap in right field to bring Jackson home on the single. Cedar Springs sophomore pitcher Kendall Fisk secured the next two outs to keep the Red Hawks up 2-1.
Both teams wore white jerseys and red pants, making for a somewhat confusing game. Despite the game being played at Cedar Springs, Lowell was the home team, only moving to Cedar Springs because of field conditions.
Lowell took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs on two outs. Sydney Darling got on base after being hit by a pitch, then top of the order Ruby German laid the bunt down the third base line and outpaced the throw to be safe, both runners advanced another base on some confusion in the Cedar Springs infield. Katie Hofman brought both runners home on a double, then Jackson and McClymont each hit doubles. Hofman and Jackson got the runs and Lowell led 5-2.
In the sixth, a single and stolen base by Samantha Hayes put her in scoring position and Lexi Martin brought her home on a single to center field. Cedar Springs put a runner on third in the seventh and final inning, but McClymont made the throw to Claire Mitchell on first base to close out the 6-2 win. Lillie finished the games with 96 pitches, 68 of them were strikes.
In the win, Jackson went two for two with an RBI and two runs scored. Hofman and McClymont both had two RBIs. The Red Arrows are 1-0 on the young season and return to action next week post spring break.
