High School Seeks Alumni Help In Confirming School Sports Records

Justin Scott | Sports

Author’s Note - While I am the Ledger sports reporter, I do help the high school in putting together their sports historical information, so this article is in first-person. It is meant to have a more informal blog tone than my usual third-person articles.

So in 2016, under athletic director Dee Crowley, I was interning at Lowell High School and it was our goal to completely update our athletic records. It got out of hand, and eventually became this massive project. Talking like thousands of man hours put into finding sports results, records, team photos, rosters, anything you can think of and eventually became the LHS historical archive. The archive can be found here, and represents one of the most in-depth all-sports high school historical archives you can find anywhere. It’s the same archive available in the high school athletics hallway.

Now, the high school is looking to update their individual program records with future plans being discussed that I can’t share, but it will be cool! The current individual records can be found on small red metal placards behind glass in the LHS athletic hallway, but most have been updated within spreadsheets owned by the high school. Some sports weren’t represented and those are being added. There were quite a few that needed updates which have been my December and January project.

There are four ways that records were researched: Lowell Ledger archives through the KDL website. Lowell High School Yearbooks, Lowell High School athletic records, and some independent research. If all four don’t form a complete picture, sport alumni recollection is the next best thing. So for golf, I’ve chatted with some of the Lowell Golf greats recalling their famous scores from 30-40 years ago.

Sports that are finalized or near finalized - Competitive Cheer, Hockey, Track & Field, Cross Country, Football, Lacrosse, Basketball, Soccer, Wrestling, Baseball, Softball, Gymnastics, and Volleyball.

The school is looking for help confirming the following sports. Here’s where we’re at. There are three particular sports that have been a particular challenge. If you have any helpful information, email me at jscott@lowellschools.com.

Bowling - During the 2000’s there were years that scores were not published in the Ledger. These were the early years of the program.

The girls bowling baker is one that likely has been beaten in history, but I haven’t found a higher score.

Golf - Early 90’s, late 80’s, early 80’s and early years of the program didn’t have a lot of indivdiual golfer scores. I golfed in high school at Lowell, so this was a fun one.

Tennis - This was the most difficult sport to research. It spanned back to 1913, the program had an early State Runner-Up trophy. Coverage of the sport was super limited at times.
