Lowell High School Announces Appointment of Travis Slanger as Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach

Lowell, May 15, 2024 – Lowell High School proudly welcomes Travis Slanger as the new Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. With a basketball coaching career spanning two decades, Coach Slanger brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Red Arrows’ basketball program.

Coach Slanger most recently served as the Girls Junior Varsity Head Coach for the Red Arrows over the past two years.  As JV coach, he has been able to build a relationship with the players who are currently coming up in the program.  Prior to that, Coach Slanger served as the Head Coach for Lowell's boys basketball team for five years.

Slanger is replacing Heath Kent, who recently resigned as the head girls coach.  Under Coach Kent’s leadership the Red Arrows recently won their MHSAA District in 2024, their first since 2011.  Lowell Athletic Director, Patrick Russell, thanked Coach Kent for his successes as head coach, saying,  “Coach Heath Kent's hard work and leadership have left a lasting positive impact on the Red Arrows girls' basketball program. It's clear that Heath has contributed to the team's success during his tenure. It's always commendable to see coaches who invest so much into their teams, fostering both athletic skill and personal growth.  The Lowell Athletic Department thanks Coach Kent for the years of success that he has brought to our girls program”

Before joining Lowell High School in 2016, Coach Slanger made a mark in the basketball scene at North Port High School in North Port, Florida, where he served as a Head Coach.  Coach Slanger led his team to two FHSAA Sweet 16’s, a Regional Championship, and an appearance in the FHSAA State Final Four.  Coach Slanger currently serves as the Coordinator of Student Supports at Lowell Middle School.

"I am honored and excited to lead the Varsity Girls Basketball Team at Lowell High School," said Coach Slanger. "I am deeply committed to continuing a culture of excellence, sportsmanship, and personal growth among our student-athletes. Together, with the support of the coaching staff, administration, and the entire Lowell community, I am confident that we will achieve great success both on and off the court."

Athletic Director Russell expressed enthusiasm for Coach Slanger's appointment, stating, "Coach Slanger brings a wealth of experience, passion, and leadership to our basketball program. We are thrilled to have him at the helm of our Varsity Girls Basketball Team, and look forward to the positive impact he will undoubtedly have on our student-athletes."
