As Lowell rode a quick start to a comfortable 50-20 win over Warren Woods Tower on Friday Night, around them it was nothing but comfortable for those fan bases, each dual without any heavy favorites. No. 3 seeded New Boston Huron picked up their first ever team state win over Linden. No. 2 Freeland was shellshocked early against No. 7 seed Fowlerville, trailing 40-8 at one point. At the far end a sea of purple. Greenville lost to Three Rivers, who arguably had the largest crowd of the evening.
The Wildcats, seeded fourth, were the de-facto number two all year. They will only show up in larger numbers tomorrow. It sets up a showdown on mat two where both crowds will likely overfill their seating, and arguably the matchup most wanted to see in a state final in division two. Lowell vs. Three Rivers, making their first ever semifinal appearance.
Against Warren Woods Tower, a rematch of the 2017 state championship match, junior Colten Barney opened up the dual with a fall for Lowell at 157, while senior and future MSU wrestler Owen Segorski scored a technical fall to put Lowell up 11-0 early.
It was win number 100 for Casey Engle on Friday night.
At 215, Max Bigard scored a late first period fall after Casey Engle won a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup at 190. It was a dominating 12-0 major decision for Engle who recorded his career 100th pin, always a big milestone for wrestlers.
“I thought we wrestled really well today,” Head Coach R.J. Boudro told the Ledger. “Casey had a great win over the number two wrestler in the state. We are really looking forward to tomorrow, it is going to be an exciting day and we are going to wrestle some different teams than we have in the past,” said Boudro.
Lowell wrestled well, but Tower also wrestled well. Likely knowing a win was out of reach, the Titans picked up three matches that swung their way late at 175, 285, and 126. They also scored a technical fall from their best wrestler, No. 2 Dominic Gumtow, and a pin at 132.
Lowell rotated in about six members of their team who typically wouldn’t be in a starting lineup. Jackson Blum, Jarrett Smith, Carter Cichocki, Cole Cichocki, and Juan Acosta were among starters who were rested Friday night. It paved the way for youngsters including freshman Lyle O’Boyle and Dylan Boone to take the mat for the first time in their high school careers in Kalamazoo.
Freshman Lyle O’Boyle competes in Friday’s state quarterfinal against Warren Woods Towers’ Foley Kedzior.
“We had some young guys out there competing tonight and it was awesome to get them some experience,” Boudro added.
Lowell put the dual out of reach from 106-120 with forfeit wins to Veronica Tapia and Carson Blum, while Mason Saylor recorded a fall. For Tapia, history was made becoming the first Lowell female to record a win at the team state tournament. Angelica Williams in 2002 was the first female wrestler to record a win at LHS. Both Tapia and fellow state qualifier Tatianna Castillo have recorded wins with the “Varsity A” team this season.
Logan Dawson (fall) and Trevor Boone (tech fall) closed out the dual for Lowell with wins. The Red Arrows will matchup with Three Rivers (26-0) tomorrow at Wings West in Kalamazoo at noon.
