Sunday, Nov. 24 - Appeared in last week’s Ledger.

Owen Segorski knew for a while he was going to be a Spartan, but made it official last week committing to Michigan State. It makes Owen the third Lowell wrestler on the squad to commit to a division one school this year after Jarrett Smith (Stanford) and Jackson Blum (Indiana).

“I chose Michigan State because I liked the coaches, team, practice environment, and it is close to home,” Segorski told the Ledger regarding his commitment.

Segorski broke through his freshman year to win an individual state championship, finished runner-up in 2023, and then last year returned to the top of the podium in the 144 lb weight class. The reserved LHS senior battled through illness during the state tournament last year and still came out on top in a competitive weight class, a testament to the talent and hard work possessed.

“I’m excited to announce my commitment to Michigan State University. Thank you to the family, friends, and coaches who have helped me get this far,” Segorski said in his commitment announcement on November 8th. Michigan Grappler ranked Segorski as Michigan’s 4th top recruit in this year’s senior class.

The Spartans finished with four points in the NCAA Championships last year and ended the season with a 10-6 dual record, despite being in a loaded Big Ten conference for wrestling. They won their first dual of the season, with American University.

“The recruitment process was pretty relaxed and slow moving. There wasn’t much stress to it,” Segorski said, who was deciding between Michigan State as well as Central Michigan and Northern Illinois. All three schools have had Red Arrows run through those programs. No Lowell wrestlers currently wrestle with the Spartans, though Carter Blough appeared with the team last year as a redshirt freshman.

He’ll look to help lead an elite group of wrestlers this year to what they hope is their 12th straight team state championship, returning four individual state champions, himself included. He enters the year with a 106-25 overall record.

Lowell starts the year on December 7th at the Grappler Gold Invitational, being held at Lowell High School.
