Equestrian Wins Reserve State Title
Last month the Lowell Equestrian team brought home a reserve state championship in Midland, finishing behind Oxford in what was a close battle in the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association’s Division B State Championship weekend. The title was a three way battle between the two schools and Owosso with just 12 points separating the three.
“The week started off a little rocky as we had three lame horses and we weren’t sure what that was going to mean on Thursday when it came time to compete. We were able to get two of the horses ready for competition and Sophomore Brianna Huisman stepped up and competed in a class that she had not done all season to fill the spot of the horse that was not ready for show. We were sitting in 5/6th place for the majority of the week until Sunday rolled around and we had two classes left. The team had their game faces on and not only did we end up Reserve State Champs but we were 5 points shy of first place,” Coach Emma Hancock told the Ledger.
LHS had no seniors this season, and with back-to-back reserve state championships, which is a notation for second place in equestrian, there’s plenty of optimism around the team.
“My favorite part of the week would have to be the energy of the whole event. You’re spending a whole week competing against the same people so during that time you make new friends and before you know it you are cheering on your own competition making the whole week memorable. We had a fun season and are excited to see what next year brings,” Hancock concluded.
