It was really fun to let this group explore their comedic side. Comedy in theatre is a little like a knot that needs to be untangled. Slowly working through the words and the language to find the meaning behind the phrases and then adding the timing to deliver each line with effect.

Laurie Kuna believes decades of experience as an educator give her a unique perspective on board matters.

“I teach all day long about how important it is to get involved in your community, to teach young people about the responsibility of citizenship,” Whitlock said. “I need to walk the walk.”

“Harvest Celebration is an opportunity to support local businesses and groups, and explore all that Lowell has to offer. Especially in the fall, there’s beautiful, natural settings nearly everywhere you look.”

“Unlike typical entries, our goal isn’t to compete for a prize but to raise funds and awareness,” Johnson-Brower said. “Ironically, despite being in the running for any official prizes, we’ve received incredible feedback and have been unofficially ranked among the top exhibits at ArtPrize.”

Johnson describes her second necklace as art nouveau, the “new art” of the European Belle Époque period from 1890 to 1910. Art nouveau was a reaction to the systematic approach taken during the 19th century, and it actively blurs the hard boundaries of classical methodology. Johnson herself, whose work casually breaks down the distinction between the fine arts (triptych paintings) and applied arts (jewelry), is at home in this space.

“I tend to put other things ahead of it, but it’s my little quiet time, peace of mind, relaxation,” TenHarmsel said. “My meditation is what it is.”

“For me, I think art is just beautiful,” Doll said. “If it does something for you, if it moves you, if you feel like you could be in that picture, it’s a good thing.”

Sharon and Chuck Oleniczak have chosen to represent the community of Lowell at ArtPrize 2024. Their collaboration, titled “Flight”, is on display in downtown Grand Rapids through Saturday, September 28, 2024, the last day of the ArtPrize 2024 event. What began as a number of sketches, evolved into a series of nine bent metal wall sculptures.

After her first success, she took classes from Damon from Deco Exchange and JoJo Rustic Remnants, traveling to different retreats, with crafting and business classes, all over the states.
