National Signing Day took place this past Wednesday, and with that a flurry of Red Arrow senior student-athletes committed to their schools of choice for athletics and academics starting next year. Gavin Barber, a Lowell Men’s Volleyball senior, committed to Calvin University. The Lowell outside hitter was MIVCA all-state second team last year for the Red Arrows, as well as all-conference.

“Gavin is one of the hardest working kids I know,” said Lowell Men’s Volleyball Head Coach Drew Davidson. “He has really helped set the culture for Lowell Men’s Volleyball. Being one of the few four year players he’s been able to grow into one of the better players in the league, and can’t wait to see what he can do this season.”

Gavin was deciding between Calvin, Adrian, and Davenport, but ultimately chose Calvin thanks to their education program. He made the announcement in December.

“I’ve been involved with the Lowell Boys Volleyball program since I was a freshman. I started playing beach volleyball during the summer and then played for the school during the spring. Then during my sophomore year I joined a travel league and have played there for 3 years,” Barber told the Ledger.

The Lowell Boys Volleyball team won the MIVCA Boys Volleyball State Champions last year. The finals just so happened to be at Calvin, where after Lowell’s win, Calvin Men’s Volleyball Head Coach Spencer Fredrick noticed Barber’s play and wanted Gavin to play for Calvin.

“I really like the Coach and the environment of Calvin and what really sold me is they have what I want to study,” Barber added, who is hoping to go into teaching and special education.

Gavin and the Lowell Boys Volleyball team take the court again this spring.
