Girls Tennis Prepares for Season

Lowell’s swan song in the OK White is here as Lowell spring sports compete in the OK Conference for the last season before moving on to the River Cities Alliance next year. For High School tennis coach Chris Phillips, he’s excited for the changes in store beginning in the fall.

“This will be our last season in this very challenging conference for tennis.  We're looking forward to next season and the RCA conference. We feel that will be more competitive and personally I'm looking forward to meeting new coaches and playing at new venues,” Phillips told the Ledger.

Looking to the future is a good thing for the tennis program. Four freshmen are on this year’s varsity team, which bodes well for the upcoming few seasons. There are seven new faces on the team this year.

The boys program has been struggling with numbers, but that’s not an issue for the girls. “The girls' numbers have always been good, but this year we have a really large group. Over 30 total between Varsity and JV. That's great to see.  Many new faces and a lot of freshmen. We really like to see that,” Phillips said. If you do have a boy in high school interested in tennis in the fall, definitely have them reach out to Coach to get started.

Kaylee Royer and Ella Todd will be the top two players this year, at #1 and #2 singles. Both were noted as having put in a lot of time to their game since last year. Lowell returns five players overall and three of four singles players.

It’s mostly duals on the schedule this season, but Coach Phillips is excited for the non-duals on the schedule. “We have a new quad we'll be attending this year at Zeeland and we look forward to that.  We also have the conference and regional tournaments at the end of the season that are always very challenging but fun days overall,” he concluded.

Lowell opens the season next week with non-conference duals against Jenison and Ionia, weather permitting.
